The government has launched the Sports for Peace tournament in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County, bringing together teams from nine counties in an initiative aimed at promoting peace, unity and cohesion across the Kerio Valley region.
The tournament seeks to use sport as a platform to bring communities together and encourage peaceful coexistence in an area that has previously experienced insecurity and inter-community tensions.
Operation Maliza Uhalifu Commander Lieutenant Colonel Martin Muthaura said sports provide communities with an opportunity to set aside their differences, strengthen relationships and focus on development.
He said initiatives that bring young people and communities together can contribute to lasting peace and create an environment conducive to economic and social development.
West Pokot Peace Director Jackson Alukusia said the government’s operation to recover illegal firearms had recorded positive results and contributed to improved security in the region.

He said the improved security situation should encourage communities to participate in development activities and strengthen peaceful relations with neighboring communities.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Public Service CEC Edwin Seronei urged residents to maintain peace and take advantage of the improving security situation to pursue development opportunities.
The tournament features teams representing Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Isiolo, Meru and Laikipia counties.
Organizers expect the competition to culminate in a grand finale on Sunday, with the tournament serving as a platform to strengthen ties among communities and promote lasting peace across the Kerio Valley and neighboring regions.
