Refugee Community leaders have welcomed efforts by the County Government of Turkana, the National Government and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to involve them in finding solutions to challenges affecting refugees and their families.
Government agencies in Turkana, together with UNHCR, on Monday held a consultative forum with zonal leaders from Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement to discuss challenges facing refugee communities and jointly identify possible solutions.
The engagement provided an opportunity for refugee leaders to present concerns affecting their communities directly to government agencies and humanitarian partners.

Among the key issues raised during the consultations were the lack of adequate cemetery land, allegations of corruption involving officers handling refugee documentation, and insecurity within and around the settlements.
The refugee leaders welcomed the consultations, saying greater involvement of their communities in decision-making would help ensure that solutions developed by government agencies and humanitarian partners reflect the challenges experienced on the ground.
The forum is expected to strengthen collaboration between refugee communities, the Turkana County Government, national government agencies and UNHCR in addressing issues affecting refugees and their host communities.
The consultations also provide a platform for authorities and humanitarian partners to better understand emerging concerns in Kakuma and Kalobeyei and identify areas requiring coordinated intervention.
