Kenyans who create fake news, deepfakes, or misleading political content using Artificial Intelligence (AI) could face fines of up to Sh5 million and possible jail terms if the proposed Artificial Intelligence Bill, 2026 is passed by the Senate of Kenya.
The bill, introduced by Karen Nyamu, comes after manipulated images of the senator circulated online, highlighting the risks of AI misuse in Kenya.
“This bill aims to protect citizens from digital manipulation and misinformation,” said Karen Nyamu.

Under the proposed law, anyone found using AI tools to generate deceptive political content, fake images, or misleading information could face hefty fines, imprisonment, or both.
The legislation is designed to regulate the growing use of AI technologies in Kenya and ensure responsible digital content creation.
Experts say the law could become one of the first comprehensive AI regulations in the country, targeting misinformation, election manipulation, and harmful online content.
The Senate is expected to debate the bill in the coming months, and if passed, it could significantly change how Kenyans interact with digital content, making the creation and spread of fake news through AI a high-risk offense.
