People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has expressed confidence in her ability to become Kenya’s next president, declaring that she is ready to lead the country in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Mwea on Sunday, Karua said the time had come for Kenya to elect a woman as president, arguing that her experience in government and record in public service make her suited for the country’s top office.
Karua cited her previous roles as Minister for Water and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki, saying Kenya needs a leader who upholds integrity.
“This time, allow a woman to be President of Kenya and divide the national cake, and I am the most suited for the job. This is the time for the Kenyan cake to be shared by a woman, none other than Martha Wangari Karua,” she said.
The PLP leader said she remained open to working with like-minded political leaders but instead that national resources should be managed by leaders committed to the interests of Kenyans.

Karua has previously ruled out serving as deputy president under the United Opposition coalition, maintaining that she will neither seek the presidency herself or support the coalition’s eventual presidential flag bearer.
During an interview on Citizen TV’s The Explainer on July 21, Karua said she would respect the coalition’s agreed process for selecting its presidential candidate, provided the process follows the rules established by the alliance.
“I will support the one who is chosen in accordance with the rules we have set. The only thing I will not do is be a running mate. That one I say. I’ve no wish to be a running mate. I did a good run with Raila Odinga. That’s just about enough. But it’s all or nothing,” she said.
Karua’s position adds another layer to the contest within the United Opposition as its leaders prepare for the 2027 presidential race.
The coalition includes Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, former CS Fred Matiang’i, former Chief Justice David Maraga and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of the Linda Mwananchi movement.
With several senior opposition figures position themselves for the presidency, the coalition faces the challenge of agreeing on a single flag bearer ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Karua’s insistence that she will not accept a running-mate position means she could either emerge as a presidential contender within the opposition camp or support another candidate if the coalition’s selection process produces a different flag bearer.
Her declaration is likely to intensify discussions over the opposition’s presidential ticket as political parties and alliances begin consolidating their strategies for the 2027 elections.
