“The suspect, Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was arrested by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage, following reports of a suspicious character extorting unsuspecting members of the public while masquerading as a law enforcement officer,” the DCI stated.
When confronted by police officers, Mwadime reportedly introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime and claimed to be attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School in Embakasi.
However, subsequent investigations established that he was not a police officer.
The DCI said a search exposed what detectives described as an elaborate attempt to make his alleged fraudulent identity appear legitimate.
“His purported police credentials soon came under scrutiny, and a search exposed an elaborate attempt to lend his fraudulent identity the trappings of legitimate authority,” the agency reported.
During the arrest, detectives recovered several items allegedly used by the suspect to support his impersonation.
They included a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, a pair of handcuffs, two keys and other items reportedly intended to make him appear like a legitimate law enforcement officer.
The suspect was taken into custody and is undergoing processing ahead of his expected arraignment in court.
The DCI did not disclose when he is expected to be presented before a court.
