Britam Chairman Kuria Muchiru Dies After Short Illness

Britam Chairman Kuria Muchiru has passed away after a short illness.

The company confirmed his death in a statement issued on Thursday evening, March 19, 2026, describing his passing as a significant loss to the organization and the broader financial sector.

“The Board of Directors and Management of Britam Holdings PLC is saddened to announce the passing away of our Group Board Chairman, Mr. Kuria Muchiru, who passed away today after a short illness,” the statement read.

Muchiru joined Britam in August 2021 as a Non-Executive Director and was appointed Board Chairman in December of the same year.

During his tenure, he is credited with steering the company through a critical phase, offering strategic leadership as the firm strengthened its position in the regional financial services market.

Headquartered in Nairobi and listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, Britam operates across seven African countries, offering services in life, health, and general insurance, as well as retirement planning, asset management, and property investment.

The company added that Muchiru played a pivotal role in advancing its transformation agenda, enhancing governance frameworks, and rebuilding stakeholder confidence. His leadership is also credited with positioning the firm for sustained growth both in Kenya and across the region.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Muchiru is remembered as a principled leader known for his integrity and commitment to those he worked with.

“On behalf of the entire Britam family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the company said.

Muchiru was an alumnus of the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics. He later qualified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K).

He began his professional career in 1983 at Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC), where he served for 35 years, rising to senior advisory roles and working with corporations, government institutions, and boards.

After leaving PwC, he transitioned into boardroom leadership, serving as Chairman of Kenya Wine Agencies Ltd and holding multiple non-executive directorships across sectors including finance, hospitality, and investment.
