Police in Uganda have recovered two motor vehicle batteries stolen from a vehicle in Ntungamo District after a sniffer dog tracked the suspects’ scent to a scrap materials workshop.

The operation, carried out by officers from the Uganda Police Force in Ntungamo District, western Uganda, resulted in the arrest of one suspect, identified as Akampwera Kenneth.

Two other suspects, identified as Wilber and Kasinge, remain at large as police continue with efforts to trace and apprehend them.

According to police, the batteries were stolen on the night of August 20, 2026, from a complainant’s motor vehicle in Cell 08, Ntungamo Ward.

After receiving the report, police officers responded to the scene and enlisted the support of the Canine Unit to track the stolen items and identify the suspects.

A sniffer dog named Yuda was introduced at the vehicle, where the suspects are believed to have stood while removing the batteries.

Yuda picked up the target scent and tracked it for approximately 200 meters along the road before branching off and entering a workshop belonging to Kenneth, who deals in scrap materials.

According to police, the dog eventually lay down inside the workshop, indicating that the scent it had picked at the crime scene had ended at the location.

Detectives subsequently searched the workshop and recovered two motor vehicle batteries.

The complainant positively identified the recovered batteries as the items stolen from the vehicle.

Kenneth was arrested and remains in police custody as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the theft.

Police are also pursuing Wilber and Kasinge, who remain at large.
