Doctors in Trans Nzoia have called off a planned strike after reaching an agreement with the county government on key issues including promotions, employment terms, and medical insurance.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Dr. Davji Atellah, said the breakthrough followed negotiations with the Trans Nzoia County government led by Governor George Natembeya.
The agreement comes weeks after the union issued a strike notice on February 4, 2026, warning that doctors would withdraw their services if their long-standing grievances were not addressed.
According to Dr. Atellah, the county government has committed to promoting 22 doctors currently in Job Group N to Job Group P by March 17, 2026, in line with timelines set by the County Public Service Board.

Doctors in Job Group P who had already undergone interviews for promotion to Job Group Q will also be promoted by the same date.
The union further noted that all remaining promotions in Job Groups Q, R, and S will be finalized within 90 days starting February 17, 2026, with the promotions accompanied by the corresponding salary adjustments.
The agreement also addresses the employment status of doctors currently serving on contract terms.
Under the deal, 12 doctors will be transitioned from contract positions to Permanent and Pensionable terms by March 31, 2026, a move expected to improve job security and benefits.
On medical insurance, the county government confirmed that the existing medical cover for doctors remains valid and assured that a comprehensive new cover will be procured before the current policy expires to avoid disruption of healthcare services for medical staff.
“This agreement is a product of unity, resolve, and structured engagement. We remain vigilant to ensure full implementation within the agreed timelines,” said Dr. Atellah.
