Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyanga has encouraged young people in Turkana to take advantage of ICT hubs in Lodwar to acquire digital skills, improve their livelihoods and tap into opportunities within the growing digital economy.
Nyanga made the remarks during an inspection tour of ICT hubs operating in Lodwar, accompanied by officials from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The visit focused on assessing the performance of the digital learning centres and identifying areas that require support to enhance service delivery and expand access to technology-driven opportunities for young people.
Speaking during the tour, the Deputy County Secretary said the County Government is committed to strengthening collaboration with UNICEF through the Directorate of Vocational Training to address challenges affecting the smooth operation of the ICT hubs.

He noted that the centres have the potential to transform the lives of young people by equipping them with practical digital skills that can be applied in employment, entrepreneurship and online work opportunities.
Nyanga further advised ICT hub operators to benchmark with successful service providers across Kenya and internationally to improve the quality of services offered and ensure the facilities remain relevant in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
He emphasized the importance of innovation, continuous learning and adopting best practices to maximize the impact of the hubs on youth empowerment and skills development.
The inspection team included UNICEF officials Stanley Akine, Serah Musengya and Dr. James Babu, who joined county officials in evaluating the facilities and discussing strategies for strengthening vocational and digital skills training.
Representing the County Government were Director of Vocational Training Stephen Eregae and Deputy Director Jeremiah Loyapan. Officials from the ICT Directorate, Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), Partnerships Directorate and managers from the county’s eight vocational training centres also participated in the visit.
The County Government and UNICEF continue to collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing access to digital skills, vocational training and technology-driven opportunities for youth across Turkana County.
County officials believe that strengthening ICT hubs will play a critical role in preparing young people for the future workforce and enabling them to participate effectively in the digital economy.
