The Turkana County Government has conducted an inspection of the 40-kilometre Sopel–Lotonguna road project in Turkana South as part of ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and connectivity across the county.

The assessment was carried out by a roads inspection team led by Roads Inspector Ekuwam, who said the exercise forms part of routine monitoring of projects funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF).

Accompanied by Engineer Emmanuel Amodoi, the team evaluated the progress and quality of works being undertaken on the road, including light bush clearing and heavy grading aimed at improving accessibility and ensuring the road remains passable throughout the year.

According to Inspector Ekuwam, the inspection sought to verify progress on the ground and ensure that the contractor is implementing the project in line with approved specifications and timelines.

“The purpose of this inspection is to verify progress on the ground and confirm that the contractor is adhering to specifications and timelines,” Ekuwam said.

He noted that the project had recorded encouraging progress and expressed confidence that the contractor would complete the works as expected.

Once completed, the road is expected to significantly improve mobility for residents of Sopel, Katonguni, Lotonguna and neighbouring villages by enhancing access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets and other essential services.

The improved road network is also expected to strengthen local trade, improve security operations and reduce transport challenges that have long affected communities in the area.

The inspection comes as the Turkana County Government continues to invest in road infrastructure through the construction of new roads and rehabilitation of existing transport corridors aimed at opening up remote areas and stimulating economic growth.

County officials say the ongoing infrastructure improvements are part of broader efforts to enhance service delivery, promote trade and improve livelihoods across Turkana.
