The ongoing upgrade of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is not only transforming one of Kenya’s most iconic sporting facilities into a world-class venue but is also creating employment opportunities, equipping young professionals with practical skills and strengthening the North Rift’s position as a regional sports hub.
Project documents indicate that the renovation is currently 47 percent complete, with 221 workers actively engaged on site. Upon completion, the stadium is expected to serve as one of the official training venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
To ensure the project meets international standards, President William Ruto tasked the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with overseeing the modernization works, citing the military’s reputation for efficiency, discipline and timely project delivery.
Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo said the investment reflects the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure as a driver of economic growth and talent development.
“Sport is an economy. Infrastructure is its foundation. Every modern stadium creates opportunities for talent to thrive, jobs to grow and communities to earn from talent,” said Kilimo.
He added that the upgraded facility would help transform sporting talent into sustainable livelihoods while positioning sports as a significant contributor to Kenya’s economy.
Assistant Civil Engineer Shadrack Ebu, who has worked on the project for the past seven months, described the construction works as a valuable professional experience that has enhanced both his technical skills and financial independence.
“In my career, this project has helped me improve my understanding of construction standards, especially in analysing drawings and ensuring quality control. Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new,” he said.
Ebu expressed confidence that the project would be completed within the expected timelines, noting that strict quality assurance measures are being implemented throughout the construction process.
“If you look at the quality control and quality analysis being undertaken here, it shows that the work is being done to the required standards. I believe the project will be completed on time,” he added.
Beyond professional growth, Ebu said the project has expanded his professional network and improved his financial stability through consistent employment.
Project engineers revealed that the ongoing renovation will increase the stadium’s seating capacity from 9,248 to 15,671 through the construction of new concrete terraces and an expanded VIP section.
To meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements, the facility will also feature a full spectator canopy, a modern tartan athletics track and an upgraded international-standard football pitch.
According to Ebu, the improved infrastructure will provide young athletes with a better environment to nurture their talents and compete at elite levels.
Workers at the site report that construction activities have maintained steady momentum under the current management system, with no significant interruptions and consistent funding since works resumed in March.
Nancy Chebet, who is involved in the project, said the current pace and quality of work reflect a major improvement compared to previous operations.
Beyond sports development, the project is expected to stimulate economic activity in Eldoret and the wider North Rift region through job creation, increased business opportunities and tourism associated with major international sporting events.
Once completed, Kipchoge Keino Stadium is expected to reinforce Eldoret’s status as Kenya’s athletics capital while providing long-term benefits for athletes, youth, businesses and local communities well beyond the 2027 AFCON tournament.
