NAIROBI, Kenya-A Kibera court has issued an arrest warrant for former National Economic Development Party (NEDP) Executive Director Daniel Onsomu, after he repeatedly failed to appear in court to face fraud charges.
The warrant was issued by the Kibera Chief Magistrates’ court following Onsomu’s absence during scheduled court mentions on June 11 and June 24, 2026.
The Allegations
Onsomu is facing charges of obtaining money by false pretenses. The prosecution alleges that between September 8 and October 6, 2026, Onsomu unlawfully obtained Ksh 2.05 million from a complainant, Daniel Nyakundi Osiemo,
According to state prosecutors, Onsomu received the funds by falsely claiming he could secure information regarding a specific parcel of land- a representation the state maintains he knew to be untrue at the time.
Denied Adjournment
During the June 24 court session, defense advocate Mose Nyambega attempted to secure an adjournment via a letter dated June 22. Nyambega cited a knee injury Onsomu reportedly sustained in an accident, arguing the injury left his client unable to attend the session and hindered the defense’s ability to proceed.
However, the court rejected the request for an adjournment. Instead, the magistrate directed the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at the Lang’ata Police Station to track down, arrest, and present Onsomu to the court.
Deeper Party Troubles
This is not the first time Onsomu’s name has been mired in controversy. He was previously linked to an internal dispute within the NEDP. At the time, party leader and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko suspended all party activities amid allegations that certain officials were extortionately soliciting money from political aspirants seeking party opportunities.
The case is scheduled for its next mention on July 23, 2026, where the court expects to receive a formal progress report from the police regarding the search and arrest of Onsomu.
