The Turkana County Government has formally taken over projects implemented under the Climate Proofing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programme following their handover by consortium partners to Deputy Governor Dr John Erus.

The programme, implemented by a consortium led by Plan International, has delivered several water and sanitation interventions aimed at improving access to essential services and strengthening community resilience to climate-related challenges.

Over the three-year implementation period, from December 2023 to November 2026, the programme delivered five water infrastructure projects and 50 pay-for-use urine-diverting dry toilets.

It also extended water access to Nationokar, Kalemchuch and Joy primary schools to support improved learning conditions and hygiene among pupils.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, the programme implemented a range of community-based interventions designed to promote sustainable sanitation practices and improve local management of water resources.

These included Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), behaviour change communication, menstrual hygiene management, water governance and entrepreneurship skills development.

The interventions were intended to encourage communities to adopt improved sanitation practices, strengthen accountability in water management and equip residents with skills to support sustainable livelihoods.

The handover to the County Government marks the transition from consortium-led implementation to county oversight of the delivered projects and related interventions.

The County Government is expected to play a central role in ensuring the infrastructure is maintained and the gains made through the programme are sustained for the benefit of local communities.
