Turkana Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus has held talks with a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) delegation on strengthening collaboration in supporting refugee and host communities in the county.

Dr. Erus hosted the UNHCR team, led by Country Representative Fatima Mohammed-Cole, at the Turkana County Government headquarters, where they discussed issues affecting Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement.

The discussions focused on mechanisms for addressing the needs of both refugee and host communities through key development frameworks, including the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Programme (KISEDP), the Shirika Plan and the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP).

Dr. Erus stressed the importance of safeguarding the gains made through refugee inclusion programmes implemented over the years.

He also commended UNHCR and development partners for their continued support towards initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and livelihoods of refugee and host populations in Turkana.

Mohammed-Cole reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Turkana County Government and other development partners implementing programmes targeting refugee and host communities.

The discussions come as Turkana continues to host large refugee and asylum-seeking populations in Kakuma and Kalobeyei, making collaboration between the county government, UN agencies and development partners critical to addressing shared social and economic needs.

Among the county officials present were Chief Officers Janerose Tioko of Partnerships, Samwel Ekaale of Economic Planning and Peter Ekaru of Fisheries.

Also present were Raphael Logum, Director of Partnerships and Resource Mobilization, and other senior county government officials.

UNHCR Kakuma Sub-Office Head Sateesh Nanduri also attended the meeting.
