NEDP Party leader Mike Sonko has renewed his campaign for greater recognition and protection of domestic workers, calling for the workers to be treated with dignity, paid fairly and protected against exploitation.
Sonko spoke on Friday, August 7, after hosting a delegation of domestic workers at the NEDP Party headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The delegation was led by Madam P, a domestic workers’ recruiter known for connecting workers with prospective employers in the Kilimani area.
During the meeting, Madam P also declared her interest in contesting the Kileleshwa Ward MCA seat on the NEDP Party ticket.
Sonko said domestic workers play a critical role in Kenyan households and should no longer be referred to using derogatory terms such as “maids” or “house girls”.
“We have renewed our campaign for the recognition and protection of domestic workers. They should no longer be referred to as ‘maids’ or ‘house girls’ but as House Managers, in recognition of the vital role they play in keeping Kenyan households running smoothly,” Sonko said.
Challenges Facing Domestic Workers
The delegation raised concerns over challenges affecting domestic workers across the country, including sexual harassment, exploitation, poor working conditions, low wages and inadequate legal protection.
They also called for greater appreciation of the contribution domestic workers make to families and the wider economy.
Sonko described domestic workers as the backbone of many Kenyan households, saying their contribution often goes unnoticed despite their important role in supporting families.
“They’re essential members of our families and deserve appreciation, empowerment and protection,” he added.
The former Nairobi Governor pledged to continue supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of domestic workers and advocating for policies that promote dignity, respect and fair treatment in the workplace.
Madam P Enters Kileleshwa MCA Race
Sonko also welcomed Madam P’s decision to seek elective office, describing her candidature as an opportunity to give domestic workers a stronger voice in political leadership and decision-making.
Her declaration adds a new dimension to the emerging political contest for the Kileleshwa Ward MCA seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sonko said workers from all sectors should have equal opportunities to participate in leadership and shape policies affecting their lives.
Also present during the meeting were NEDP Deputy Party Leader Antony Manyara and the party’s Legal Officer Sammy Musyimi.
Sonko concluded by calling for a society where every worker, regardless of occupation, is treated with dignity, respect and fairness.
