India’s First Private Orbital Rocket Vikram-1 Successfully Completes Maiden Flight

India has achieved a major milestone in its growing space ambitions after the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket, Vikram-1, successfully completed its maiden flight on Saturday.

Built by Indian space startup Skyroot Aerospace, the rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, marking the first successful orbital launch by an Indian private company.

Skyroot Aerospace Celebrates Historic Launch

Following the launch, Skyroot Aerospace announced the successful completion of the mission.

“Hello space, we have arrived! Vikram-1’s Test Flight-1 has completed its mission. The first ever Indian private sector launch has been successfully completed,” the company said in a post on X.

The Vikram-1 rocket stands approximately as tall as a seven-storey building and is designed to carry small satellites weighing up to 350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit.

Milestone for India’s Private Space Sector

Chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), Pawan Goenka, praised the achievement, describing it as a significant breakthrough for India’s private space industry.

He said the mission exceeded expectations for a first orbital launch by an Indian private company.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed the achievement, calling it a landmark moment in India’s space journey.

“The growing participation of our private sector is opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation,” Modi said. “This achievement will encourage countless youngsters to dream bigger and innovate fearlessly.”

Unique Scientific Payloads

The historic mission carried a variety of payloads designed to showcase innovation and technological advancement.

Among the payloads onboard were a lab-grown diamond, robotic arms designed for space debris removal, a miniature 18-karak gold rocket, and miniature sculptures of renowned Indian scientists and leaders including Vikram Sarabhai, C.V. Raman, and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

India’s Space Economy Continues to Expand

India’s space sector has experienced rapid growth since the government opened the industry to private investment and participation in 2020.

The country’s space economy is currently valued at approximately $8.4 billion and is home to more than 400 space startups.

The sector’s expansion has been built on decades of investment and expertise developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Launch Will Boost India’s Global Standing

Former ISRO Chairman K. Sivan praised the achievement, noting that rocket development remains one of the most challenging areas of space technology.

“With Skyroot espeally, the rocket is one of the most challenging and complex technologies in the space system. It is going to motivate many people,” Sivan said.

He added that the success would enhance India’s reputation in the global space industry.

“If an Indian startup can make one of the most challenging things in the space industry, then it gives a huge boost to India’s reputation globally.”

The successful launch marks another milestone in India’s rise as a major space power, coming less than three years after the country became the fourth nation in history to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon.
