Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia has been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and taken to the agency’s headquarters for questioning over alleged inciteful political remarks.
The legislator was arrested on Monday morning outside the Royal Media Services (RMS) studios in Nairobi after spending the night inside the media house, claiming police officers were waiting to detain him.
Kaguchia had remained at the premises following allegations that security officers had surrounded the station and mounted roadblocks after his appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme.
After leaving the studios on Monday morning, detectives took him into custody before driving him to the DCI headquarters for grilling over remarks he allegedly made during the television interview.
On Sunday night, the MP posted on social media, insisting that he would not be intimidated. He claimed a contingent of police officers had surrounded Royal Media Services immediately after his interview.
The arrest follows public criticism over remarks attributed to Kaguchia, in which he allegedly threatened supporters of President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election. The comments attracted condemnation from political leaders and members of the public, who described the language as inflammatory and inappropriate.
Investigators are reportedly examining whether the remarks violated laws governing hate speech, incitement and public order.
According to reports, the arrest was carried out after a senior police officer visited the media house and demanded that the MP be produced. Nairobi DCI boss Daniel Kandie is said to have led the team that arrived at the station, held discussions with the management and later escorted Kaguchia out before he was driven away in a police vehicle.
His legal team has since indicated that it is pursuing the matter and assessing the next legal steps.
Kisii Senator Momoima Onyonka was seen accompanying the lawmaker as he left the Royal Media Services premises.
On Sunday night, residents using Maalim Juma Road off Dennis Pritt Road reported a heavy police presence around the media house, with hooded officers stopping and searching vehicles leaving the area, causing traffic disruptions.
By Monday morning, a number of Kaguchia’s supporters had gathered outside the DCI headquarters as investigations into the matter continued.
