KRA has issued an agency notice seeking to recover KSh623.4 million in tax arrears attributed to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has moved to recover KSh623.4 million in outstanding tax arrears attributed to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko by issuing an agency notice directing one of his customers to remit any money owed to him or held on his behalf.

In a notice dated October 12, 2026, KRA’s Debt, Refunds and Ledger Management Division declared the unnamed customer an agent of Sonko and instructed it to pay KSh623,389,105 from any funds owed to the former governor or held on his behalf.

The notice was signed by Njoroge Muiruri, Debt Enforcement Manager in KRA’s Micro and Small Taxpayers Department.

“The above-referenced Taxpayer, who is also one of your customers, has outstanding tax arrears amounting to Sh623,389,105,” the notice states.

KRA said the directive was issued under Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, which provides for the appointment of agents to facilitate the recovery of tax debts.

According to the notice, the outstanding amount relates to individual income tax arrears accrued between January 2015 and December 2019.

The total comprises of principal tax of KSh308.9 million, KSh15.8 million in penalties, and KSh298.7 million in interest.

The combined amount brings the tax arrears cited in the notice to approximately KSh623.4 million.

The authority directed the recipient of the agency notice to make payments through a valid, system-generated payment slip.

It also required the recipient to submit a return indicating any money held on behalf of the taxpayer.

KRA warned that the notice would remain in force until the full amount had been recovered, including where only partial payments had been made.

The directive seeks to enable the authority to recover the outstanding amount from funds available to the taxpayer through the appointed agent.

KRA further cautioned that an agent who, without reasonable cause, fails to comply with the notice could be held personally liable for the amount specified.

The warning was issued with reference to Section 42(13) of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015.

The notice places the recipient under an obligation to respond in accordance with the applicable legal requirements.

The recovery process concerns the tax arrears outlined in KRA’s notice. Any further developments, including payments made or responses from Sonko or the recipient of the notice, would be necessary to establish the current status of the recovery effort.
