Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has informed patients and referring health facilities that six of its operating theatres are undergoing renovations, leaving four operational as the hospital continues providing surgical services.

In a notice dated October 14, 2026, and signed by Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Joshua Clinton Okise, the hospital said the renovation works were progressing well and were expected to be completed within one month.

“The management of JOOTRH wishes to inform patients, referring health facilities, stakeholders and the general public that renovation works on six (6) theatres are ongoing. Currently, four (4) theatres remain operational, allowing the Hospital to continue providing surgical services,” the notice stated.

JOOTRH management assured patients that surgical services would continue during the renovation period.

According to the notice, the refurbished theatres will progressively resume operations after the completion of the works and the necessary inspections and commissioning.

“The renovation works are progressing well and are expected to be completed within one month, after which the renovated theatres will progressively resume operations following the necessary inspection and commissioning,” the hospital stated.

The phased reopening is expected to restore the hospital’s theatre capacity as the renovation programme progresses.

The hospital has urged referring health facilities to coordinate with its management before sending patients for elective surgical procedures during the renovation period.

However, emergency referrals should continue in accordance with established referral protocols.

“The referring facilities are encouraged to coordinate with JOOTRH before referring patients for elective surgical procedures during this period, while emergency referrals should continue as per established referral protocols,” the notice added.

The guidance is intended to help referring facilities coordinate patient care while some theatres remain unavailable.

JOOTRH said the renovation works form part of efforts to improve its theatre capacity and enhance the quality of care provided to patients.

Management also thanked patients, referring health facilities, stakeholders and the general public for their patience, understanding and continued cooperation during the works.

The announcement comes days after concerns were reportedly raised by patients and their families about the quality of care at the hospital, prompting calls for investigations and accountability.

The latest notice focuses on the ongoing theatre renovations, the continued provision of surgical services and the coordination required for referrals during the work period.
