Former Sports Principal Secretary Amb. Peter Kirimi Kaberia and five other individuals and companies have been charged over the alleged misappropriation of KSh330 million allocated for preparations to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
The six accused persons appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Isabella Barasa at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for plea taking following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the approval of the prosecution by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The accused are Kaberia, a former Sports Principal Secretary; Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, a former Senior Principal Finance Officer at the Ministry of Sports; Enock Ondwari Onditi, a former Principal Accountant; John Kiende Ruga, a former Senior Superintendent Engineer; Samuel Mbaa Njoroge, a director of Taxwise Consulting Limited and Liroma Assurance Services Limited; and Anthony Mwangi Kimanthi, a director of Lease Pride Limited.

The case involves 16 accused persons, including individuals and companies, facing a total of 17 counts.
The charges include abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, failure to comply with procurement laws, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.
Eight accused persons—Kaberia, Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, Harun Chebet Komen, Enock Onditi Ondwari, John Kiende Ruga, Marcos Gonzales Puente, Auditel Kenya and Samuel Mbaa Njoroge—also face an additional charge of conspiracy to commit an economic crime.
All the accused persons denied the charges.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Norah Achieng and assisted by Principal Prosecution Counsel Kennedy Panyako and Prosecution Counsel Thelma Nanjaya, did not oppose the release of the accused persons on bond or bail.
The court granted KSh3 million bond or KSh1 million cash bail to Kaberia, Stephen Njoroge, Enock Onditi, John Kiende, Anthony Mwangi and Lease Pride Limited.
Samuel Mbaa Njoroge, Taxwise Consulting Limited and Liroma Assurance Services Limited were each granted KSh2 million bond or KSh600,000 cash bail.
The court also ordered all the accused persons to surrender their passports within seven days.
The case will be mentioned on September 15, 2026.
The accused persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of law.
