Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned the abduction of a Standard journalist, calling for a swift investigation and stronger protection for journalists, particularly as Kenya approaches the election period.
Murkomen described the incident as unacceptable and called for those responsible to face legal consequences.
“It’s embarrassing and barbaric. Whoever is involved must face the full force of the law,” he said.
The Interior CS also called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to enhance security for journalists ahead of the elections, saying media practitioners should be able to carry out their duties without fear.
“I want to ask the IG that as we head into the election period, let’s provide journalists with enough security for them to perform their duties,” he said.
Murkomen defended press freedom and praised journalists for their contribution to promoting peace and security in the country. He assured members of the media that the Government remained committed to their safety.
“I want to assure journalists that I’m one of your stakeholders. I have benefited from working with you, and I know the good work you are doing,” he noted.
The Cabinet Secretary further urged individuals who disagree with media reports to seek legal redress rather than resorting to violence or intimidation.
“If I have a problem with a journalist, I will go to court,” he added.
Murkomen was speaking at St. Michael’s Secondary School Grounds in Embobut, Elgeyo Marakwet County, during the funeral service of his aunt, Mama Sokomo Chemeitoi KoJepkosgei.
