Calm and relative peace have returned to parts of West Pokot County that were previously affected by insecurity, allowing residents to resume daily activities, rebuild livelihoods and move freely across neighboring areas.
The improved security situation has offered communities along the volatile West Pokot-Elgeyo Marakwet border an opportunity to recover from the effects of prolonged insecurity and reconnect with neighboring communities.
However, local leaders say sustaining the gains will require concerted efforts by the national government, county authorities and residents, particularly through programmes tailored to the needs of communities living in conflict-prone areas.
Former West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio made the remarks during a visit to Cheptulel, Arpollo and Chesegon, areas that have previously experienced insecurity along the West Pokot-Elgeyo Marakwet border.
Poghisio urged residents to embrace dialogue, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation, while warning against practices that could undermine the progress made in restoring stability.
He said lasting peace can only be achieved when communities take ownership of peace-building efforts and work collectively to resolve disputes.
Poghisio also called on the government to extend affirmative action and targeted assistance to residents whose livelihoods and settlements have been disrupted by insecurity.

They said addressing historical grievances, improving basic services and supporting peaceful resettlement would be essential in securing lasting stability in West Pokot and neighboring counties.
