Fighting in Sudan entered a second consecutive day on Thursday, with an activist group reporting drone activity over the capital Khartoum and the nearby cities of Omdurman and Bahri as clashes continued in other parts of the country.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the El-Fasher Resistance Committee said drones had been spotted over the three cities, with residents hearing explosions as ground-to-air defences responded to the aerial activity.
“Militia drones are flying over the skies of Omdurman, Bahri, and Khartoum, and the sound of successive and scattered explosions can be heard, while ground-to-air defences are dealing with the drones,” the committee said.
The activist group did not report any casualties or damage from the reported drone activity. Other reports attributed the drones to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), although the claims could not be independently verified.
The committee also reported attacks in Karmak and the nearby village of Sheikh, blaming what it described as “Duklu militias”, a term used by the Sudanese army to refer to RSF.
It further claimed that drones had been launched from Ethiopian territory to attack targets in Karmak. The claim could not be independently verified.
Drone Attacks Reported Across Sudan
The latest reports followed a day of intense fighting on Wednesday, when drone attacks were reported in several parts of Sudan.
Bahri and Omdurman around Khartoum were reportedly targeted, while Atbara and Ad-Damir in River Nile State and El-Obeid in North Kordofan also came under attack.
The fresh fighting comes as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have intensified operations in Kordofan, where the RSF has suffered setbacks on several fronts.
Kordofan has emerged as one of the main battlegrounds in Sudan’s ongoing war, with both sides seeking to expand their territorial control.
The reported attacks are the latest developments in the conflict between SAF and RSF, which has spread across several parts of Sudan since fighting erupted in April 2023.
El-Obeid Faces Growing Humanitarian Pressure
The renewed violence comes amid growing concerns that the RSF could escalate its offensive against El-Obeid in North Kordofan, potentially putting hundreds of thousands of civilians at risk.
According to the United Nations, El-Obeid remains under the control of the Sudanese army but has been surrounded by the RSF for nearly 18 months.
The prolonged encirclement has left residents facing siege-like conditions and increasing humanitarian pressure.
Damage to critical infrastructure has further worsened the situation. Strikes on key facilities, including electricity infrastructure, have caused prolonged power outages, disrupted access to water and placed additional pressure on hospitals already struggling to operate.
Humanitarian Crisis
Sudan’s ongoing conflict has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The war is estimated to have killed at least 59,000 people and displaced more than 14 million others from their homes.
Around 33.7 million people are also estimated to be in need of humanitarian assistance, while severe restrictions on aid access have further compounded the crisis.
The continued fighting and disruption of essential services are increasing pressure on civilians across Sudan, with humanitarian agencies warning of the devastating consequences of prolonged conflict.
