Business activities in Embu Town were disrupted on Friday after hundreds of youths and boda boda operators poured into the streets to celebrate the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
The celebrations caused major traffic congestion along the busy Embu-Meru Highway, with boda boda riders hooting, waving party colours and chanting slogans in support of the people of Ol Kalou following the outcome of Thursday’s poll.
DCP Secures First National Assembly Seat
DCP candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Ngotho was declared the winner after garnering 35,440 votes, comfortably defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who received 5,450 votes.
The by-election attracted significant national attention, with political observers viewing it as a major test of the growing influence of DCP leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The victory also handed the party its first-ever seat in the National Assembly, strengthening its political profile ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Youth Leaders Praise Ol Kalou Voters
The celebrations in Embu were led by local politician and youth leader James Ireri, popularly known as “Soldier”, who commended Ol Kalou residents for what he described as their commitment to protecting their democratic rights.
“The level of maturity and commitment demonstrated by the people of Ol Kalou in protecting their vote was remarkable. Despite the challenges they allegedly faced, they remained steadfast and ensured their voice was heard through the ballot,” Ireri said.
He claimed that voters remained determined throughout the campaign period despite alleged cases of intimidation, threats and harassment.
DCP Predicts Strong Performance in 2027
Ireri argued that the Ol Kalou victory reflects DCP’s growing popularity, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, and warned politicians aligned with UDA that they risk losing elective seats if the trend continues.
“The DCP wave in the Mt. Kenya region is unstoppable. We are confident the party will secure seats across all levels of leadership- from the Members of County Assemblies to governors, senators, MP and women reps,” he stated.
He further called for unity among Mt Kenya residents and accused some leaders of fueling political divisions within the region.
Criticism Directed at Local Leadership
The youth leader also criticized Public Works and Human Capital Development Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, accusing him of contributing to political divisions in the Mt Kenya region.
In addition, some of the celebrating youths criticized Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who also serves as UDA National Chairperson, accusing her administration of failing to deliver on key development promises made during the 2022 General Election campaign.
Peaceful Celebrations Despite Traffic Disruptions
Although the demonstrations remained peaceful throughout the day, they significantly disrupted movement within Embu Town, forcing motorists to endure long delays as the procession moved through major roads.
The celebrations underscored the political significance of the Ol Kalou by-election result, which continues to generate reactions across the country.
