Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the opening of an expanded Renal Unit at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, marking a significant step in Nairobi County’s efforts to improve access to life-saving dialysis services and specialized healthcare.

The modern renal facility, located at the Level 5 hospital in Umoja II, Embakasi West, is equipped with state-of-the-art dialysis machines and supported by a skilled nephrology team to provide comprehensive kidney care services.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Sakaja said the expanded unit will offer a wide range of services, including hemodialysis, comprehensive renal care, personalized treatment plans, nutrition and lifestyle counselling, as well as patient support services.

“The expansion of our renal services reflects our commitment to ensuring Nairobi residents can access quality, affordable and specialized healthcare without having to travel long distances. This facility will improve treatment outcomes for patients living with kidney disease,” said Governor Sakaja.

The governor noted that the new facility is part of Nairobi County’s broader strategy to strengthen specialized healthcare services, reduce referrals to other hospitals, and bring quality medical care closer to residents.

Hospital management has encouraged patients seeking dialysis and specialist kidney care services to schedule appointments through the facility’s dedicated Renal Unit.

The launch adds to a series of recent upgrades at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, including expanded critical care services, modern operating theatres, an upgraded emergency department, and improved diagnostic capabilities. These developments highlight Nairobi County’s continued investment in strengthening public healthcare infrastructure.

Governor Sakaja also urged residents in need of kidney care services to visit the new Renal Unit at the hospital along Kangundo Road in Umoja II. The services are available under the Social Health Authority (SHA), helping improve access to affordable dialysis and specialized renal care for Nairobi residents.
