NAIROBI, Kenya — More than 293,000 students have officially secured placements in Kenyan universities and tertiary institutions for the 2026/2027 academic year, setting the next educational chapter for the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the release of the 2026 University Placement Results on Wednesday at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi, mapping out an expanded landscape for higher education and technical training across the country.
Out of the 980,535 candidates who sat for the national exams, 270,508 achieved the minimum university entry grade of C+ or higher, while the remaining pool of students qualified for technical and professional pathways.
To accommodate this massive transition, the Commission for University Education approved 327,157 total degree vacancies across 43 public and 33 private universities, alongside roughly one million training slots in public technical institutions.
The final placement distribution revealed that 202,133 students were admitted into degree programmes, 28,246 joined the Kenya Medical Training College, 875 entered secondary teacher training colleges, and 500 were placed into regular diploma in law programmes.
In a historic first, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service expanded its mandate to place 765 students into the Kenya Utalii College, adding the hospitality pioneer to a specialized roster that already includes the Kenya School of Law and the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas National Polytechnic.
In a notable trend shifting toward technical skills, the Cabinet Secretary revealed that 8,915 students who actually achieved a university-qualifying C+ or higher intentionally chose to forego degree paths, opting instead to pursue non-degree diploma and certificate courses.
Overall, the ministry successfully placed 293,869 students across degree, craft certificate, and artisan certificate levels.
Acknowledging that a significant number of eligible candidates missed the initial registration window, the Education Ministry directed the central placement body to immediately reopen the portal for late applicants to ensure that no student is left behind.
The government has simultaneously commissioned a study to track down unplaced students to understand why they skipped the initial registration window, whether due to financial hardships or alternative higher education paths.
For those who did secure a slot but wish to alter their academic destination, the government has provided a major relief by extending the traditional inter-university transfer window from two weeks to one full month, giving students ample time to switch institutions or programs once universities release their official joining instructions.
Concurrently, the Higher Education Financing portal has officially opened for first-time applicants, prompting the ministry to urge all placed students requiring government scholarships, loans, or bursaries to log onto the HEF or HELB portals to submit their applications as soon as possible.
Following the high-stakes announcement, candidates from the KCSE Class of 2025 have been advised to check their official placement status either through automated SMS notifications sent directly to their registered mobile numbers or by logging directly into the official KUCCPS Student Portal to view their allocated institutions and courses.
