Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi joined fellow African Foreign Ministers in Luanda, Angola, for the 26th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU).
The session was convened ahead of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of States and Government of the African Union.
The high-level meeting was led by Édouard Bizimana, Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairperson of the AU Executive Council, alongside Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and other senior leaders and delegates.
The deliberations focused on strengthening Africa’s mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution amid increasingly complex peace and security challenges, including terrorism and violent extremism, internal conflicts, inter-state tensions and emerging geopolitical pressures.
The meeting provided an opportunity for member states to assess the effectiveness of the African Peace and Security Architecture and advance practical reforms aimed at strengthening conflict prevention, early warning and response mechanisms.
The ministers also discussed ways to improve coordination between the African Union, member states and Regional Economic Communities, while exploring sustainable financing mechanisms for African-led peace initiatives.
As the continent continues its efforts to achieve the AU’s Silencing the Guns agenda by 2030, the session emphasised the need for greater political will, solidarity and collective responsibility in addressing the root causes of conflicts.
Participants also stressed the importance of upholding constitutional order and promoting dialogue and diplomacy as key pathways towards lasting peace and stability.
Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism, the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the pursuit of African solutions to African challenges as the continent works towards a more peaceful, secure, stable and prosperous future for its people.
