Kerio Health Centre in Turkana Central has received a new ambulance following the handover of a Toyota Land Cruiser donated by the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI).
The vehicle was formally handed over to the County Government by TBI Deputy Manager Joshua Egialan, marking the completion of the transfer from the research institution to the county.
The white Toyota Land Cruiser Station Wagon has been equipped as an ambulance and is already registered in the name of the Turkana County Government.
The donation is expected to strengthen emergency response and patient referral services at Kerio Health Centre, particularly for residents who often travel long distances to access healthcare.
New Ambulance to Improve Emergency Response
The addition of the ambulance is expected to make it easier for health workers to respond to emergencies and transport patients requiring specialised treatment to higher-level facilities.
For communities around Kerio, where distance can be a major barrier to accessing healthcare, the vehicle could help reduce delays in emergency referrals and improve access to timely medical care.
The donation also reflects TBI’s continued partnership with the Turkana County Government and its support for communities in the county.
With the vehicle now officially under county ownership, health authorities are expected to deploy it to support emergency and referral services at the facility.
County Health Team Welcomes Donation
The handover was attended by area MCA David Ekod, Director of Health Products and Technology Dr David Moru, Director of Medical Services Dr Kidalio Ekiru, Emergency and Referral Coordinator Kephas Achiro and Turkana Central Public Health Nurse Jane Atabo.
Members of the sub-county health management team and residents of the Kerio community also witnessed the handover.
The new ambulance adds to Turkana’s emergency response capacity and is expected to play an important role in ensuring patients receive medical attention and referrals when they need them most.
