Leaders in Mwingi Central, Kitui County, have condemned remarks by area MP Gideon Mutemi Mulyungi over a local NGO drilling boreholes across the constituency.
Speaking on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the leaders described the MP’s remarks as reckless and unwarranted, saying the ongoing water projects are important to communities facing persistent water shortages.
The criticism followed Mulyungi’s call for the NGO to leave the area if it continued drilling boreholes without involving his office.
However, former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu and Kitui County Chief Officer for Finance John Makau urged the organization to disregard the remarks and continue supporting residents through its water projects.

The leaders said Mwingi is an arid area where access to water remains a major challenge for households and communities.
They argued that borehole projects could help address the water crisis and improve the livelihoods of residents who continue to face difficulties accessing reliable water supplies.
The leaders also maintained that water services are a devolved function, urging the Mwingi Central MP to respect the roles and responsibilities of the county government.
They called for cooperation between elected leaders, the county administration and development organizations to ensure residents benefit from projects aimed at addressing critical needs.
The dispute comes amid ongoing efforts by various organizations and government agencies to improve water access in arid and semi-arid parts of Kitui County, where water scarcity remains a persistent challenge.
