Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau has been elected the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after securing a commanding victory in the by-election held on Thursday, July 16.

Official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) showed Kamau garnering 35,440 votes, defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who received 5,450 votes.

Jubilee Party candidate Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa finished a distant third with 198 votes, while the other candidates shared the remaining votes. Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka of the National Liberal Party (NLP) received 103 votes, Timothy Kamau Kariuki of PM garnered 51, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri of PNU secured 28, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi of FPK polled 19, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki of KMM received 16, and Rachael Wangui Njoroge of PDP garnered 11.

The results were declared by Returning Officer Antony Njiraine after the completion of vote tallying across the constituency.

Kamau Calls for Unity After Victory

Addressing supporters after being declared the winner, Kamau urged residents to move beyond political competition and work together for the development of Ol Kalou.

“Asiyekubali kushindwa si mshindani. Leo ni mimi, na kesho bado ni nyinyi. 2027 bado ni mimi. All the ideas that you had, I listened to you, and you had great, brilliant ideas we can always share for the betterment of Ol Kalou; we can always engage,” he said.

The newly elected MP emphasized that leadership should be anchored on collaboration rather than political rivalry, noting that every candidate had presented valuable ideas that could contribute to the constituency’s growth.

Victory Seen as Major Boost for DCP

The outcome was celebrated by DCP supporters, who described the landslide victory as a significant milestone for the party.

Sammy Ngotho praised party leader Rigathi Gachagua, saying the by-election result demonstrated the party’s growing political influence.

“To my party leader, H.E Rigathi Gachagua, the rejected stone became the cornerstone. They may have impeached you, but today you have made a statement that the king of the mountain, the party of choice, the man who will lead our country into the future is none other than Rigathi Wa Gachagua,” he said.

By-Election Draws National Political Attention

The Ol Kalou by-election attracted intense national interest, with senior leaders from both the Kenya Kwanza administration and the opposition actively campaigning for their respective candidates throughout the campaign period.

Political analysts had viewed the contest as an early test of strength between President William Ruto’s UDA and the DCP associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kamau’s decisive victory is expected to shape Kenya’s political landscape as parties intensify preparations for the next general election.
