NYERI, Kenya– The High Court in Nyeri has found former military officer Major Peter Mwaura Mugure guilty of the brutal 2019 triple murder of his wife and two young children, concluding a grueling trial that has gripped the nation for nearly seven years.
Delivering the landmark judgement, the court ruled that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had successfully proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, establishing a chilling timeline of premeditated domestic execution.
Mugure, a senior military officer previously stationed at the Laikipia Air Base, was convicted on three counts of murder for the October 2019 killings of his estranged wife, Joyce Syombua, and their two children, Shanice Maua and Prince Michael.
The judge noted that the prosecution’s case presented an airtight web of forensic and circumstantial evidence that irresistibly pointed to the ex-soldier’s guilt.
Throughout the high-stakes trial, Principal Prosecution Counsels Jennifer Kaniu and Pithon Mwangi systematically dismantled Mugure’s defense by demonstrating that the murders were meticulously planned well in advance.
The prosecution proved that the former officer deliberately lured his family to the Laikipia Air Base on October 25, 2019, under the false pretext of a weekend family reunion.
State evidence revealed that on the subsequent morning, Mugure took his children out into the base grounds under the guise of a casual stroll before killing them, returning later that evening to murder their mother.
In a grim concealment effort, he packed the three bodies into the boot of his personal vehicle, smuggled them past military checkpoints, and buried them in a shallow grave at a remote site in Thingithu area.
Crucially, the court relied on compelling witness testimonies proving that Mugure had personally scouted the disposal site three days prior to the family’s arrival and hired a casual laborer to dig the trench, providing undeniable legal proof of premeditation.
Following the absolute conviction on all counts, the court remanded the disgraced military officer in custody ahead of his formal sentencing, which has been officially scheduled for July 14, 2026.
