Kenyan leaders have been urged to refrain from politicising the tragic death of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno, with government officials warning against turning grief into political theatre.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura expressed deep concern over what he called a disturbing trend of leaders trading accusations and spreading unverified claims surrounding the late MP’s death.
“This is a moment for reflection, dignity, and solidarity with the bereaved family,” Mwaura told reporters. “It is deeply regrettable that some individuals are attempting to exploit this tragedy for political gain, pushing unsubstantiated allegations and divisive rhetoric.”
He called on leaders to demonstrate restraint, empathy, and respect, noting that national unity must take precedence over partisan interests during such a sensitive period.
Mwaura also paid tribute to Ng’eno’s legacy, describing him as a dedicated and honourable leader who served his constituents and the nation with unwavering commitment.
“He served with integrity and devotion, and many of us were privileged to work alongside him in Parliament and beyond,” Mwaura said.
Echoing the sentiment, Buuri MP Rindikiri Mugambi warned that turning a leader’s death into political fodder undermines African cultural values that emphasise respect for the departed and compassion for grieving families.
“Those politicising Ng’eno’s death must stop,” Mugambi said. “The family is still hurting, and we cannot allow politics to add to their pain.”
