Mwingi West Member of Parliament Charles Nguna has criticised the United Opposition over what he described as internal divisions, leadership struggles and a lack of a clear agenda for Kenyans ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The legislator urged voters to prioritise leaders with demonstrable development records rather than politicians he accused of making populist promises without clear strategies for delivering them.

“The opposition is too confused. They have no structures, mechanisms or strategy to unseat President William Ruto. They are all competing over who will emerge as the kingpin among themselves. That is a clear sign of the poor leadership they could offer if elected, something that cannot happen,” Nguna said.

The MP, popularly known as CNN, made the remarks following the heckling of his former Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, during the launch of the Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM).

The second-term legislator also praised President William Ruto's development record, saying Mwingi West and the wider Kitui County had benefited from infrastructure and social development projects through cooperation with the national government.

Among the projects he highlighted was the ongoing completion and upgrading of the Kwasiku–Migwani–Mbondoni Road.

He also cited the Kiio Sports Academy, which he said was approximately 95 per cent complete, and Thitani Technical Training Institute (TTI), whose construction he reported had reached about 72 per cent.

Nguna further pointed to rural electrification initiatives, including projects in Kithalaani village, aimed at connecting households, schools and health facilities to the national electricity grid.

He maintained that voters should assess political leaders based on measurable performance and their ability to deliver on commitments made to the electorate.

Nguna was elected to Parliament on a Wiper Party ticket but has since indicated that he intends to seek re-election on the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

He expressed confidence in his support among Mwingi West voters as he prepares for the 2027 General Election.

“All I know is that the voters are with me. The people have declared it is ‘CNN tano tena’. My decision to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration has yielded tangible benefits for Mwingi West, including increased youth employment and accelerated infrastructure development,” he said.

His remarks come amid efforts by President Ruto and his allies to expand the ruling administration's political support in Ukambani, a region where opposition politics has traditionally been influential.

Kitui County is expected to remain an important area of political contestation as parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
