Kalonzo Says No Leadership Vacuum After Uhuru’s Ukombozi Exit

Kalonzo Musyoka addresses the Ukombozi Alliance leadership
Ukombozi Alliance Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has clarified the coalition’s leadership structure following Uhuru Kenyatta’s resignation.

The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s resignation from the coalition’s council chairmanship will not affect its leadership, direction or operations.

Kalonzo welcomed Kenyatta’s decision to relinquish the position, saying the former President had played a significant role in the formation of the coalition and its efforts to defend democratic institutions.

“There is no vacuum at the helm of Ukombozi, and no change in the party's leadership, direction or programme,” Kalonzo said in a statement issued on Wednesday evening.

Kalonzo said Kenyatta’s decision to step down from the council chairmanship had been received with gratitude.

He thanked the retired President for his contribution to the coalition and said Kenyatta remained a member of the political outfit and would continue to be available to offer counsel.

“We thank him, and we are grateful to his family for the sacrifices that came with that service,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo added that Kenyatta would be invited for an official visit during which a formal handover ceremony would be conducted.

Clarifies Leadership Roles

The Wiper Patriotic Front leader sought to clarify the distinction between the position previously held by Kenyatta and his own role as Party Leader.

He said the Chair of Council is a coalition-level position focused on counsel, convening and guidance, while the Party Leader is responsible for the political and executive leadership of the organisation.

“The Party Leader is the political and executive head of the party. He speaks for the party, runs its day-to-day affairs, represents it before the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and other institutions, and answers to its members. I hold that office, and it is unaffected by President Kenyatta's resignation,” Kalonzo said.

He therefore maintained that Kenyatta’s departure from the council chairmanship had not changed the coalition’s leadership structure.

ORPP Reserves Ukombozi Alliance Name

Kalonzo also announced that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) had reserved the name The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) for the coalition.

He said the alliance was now finalising the compliance requirements arising from the name reservation.

“On our name, I am pleased to inform our members and the public that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has reserved the name The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) for us,” he said.

The announcement marks another step in the coalition’s transition from its former identity as Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party. Current reporting also confirms that the coalition has been operating under the Ukombozi Alliance name since September and is completing the remaining compliance requirements. Kalonzo’s statement followed Kenyatta’s resignation from his leadership position within the former Azimio coalition.

In a letter dated October 5, Kenyatta said his decision followed the formal handover of Jubilee Party leadership to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

“Following the official handover of the Jubilee Party Leadership, I am writing to formally resign from my leadership position within the Azimio La Umoja Coalition, effective immediately,” Kenyatta said.

Kenyatta said the decision was not a departure from the coalition’s political journey but part of the renewal of democratic institutions.

He also said he would remain a committed member of the coalition and continue to offer counsel when called upon.

Ukombozi Positions Itself Ahead of 2027

The leadership clarification comes as the coalition continues reorganising under its new Ukombozi Alliance identity.

Kalonzo urged members and supporters to remain united as the coalition positions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The latest developments leave Kenyatta outside the coalition’s formal council leadership while, according to Kalonzo, preserving his membership and role as a potential source of counsel. The coalition is meanwhile completing the regulatory requirements associated with its new name. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka
