Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi governor’s seat in the 2027 General Election, adding another high-profile name to the race for control of Kenya’s capital.
Speaking during a Sunday service at Jesus Is Alive Ministries on September 6, 2026, Wanjiru said she would seek the seat on the Kenya Moja Movement (K1) party ticket.
The former Starehe MP said her decision followed consultations with her supporters, political allies and other stakeholders who had urged her to provide direction on her next political move.
“My bid for the Nairobi governor’s seat is not a personal ambition, it is a call to serve and a commitment to restore dignity, order, accountability, and opportunities to the people of Nairobi,” she said.
“People of Nairobi have asked me to give them direction on my next political step,” she added.

Wanjiru said her decision to return to elective politics was driven by her desire to serve Nairobi residents and improve efficiency, accountability and management at the county government.
She also called on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other political leaders to work with the K1 party, saying the capital was ready for meaningful political and administrative change.
Wanjiru invited Sifuna and other leaders to join the K1 movement in what she described as an effort to build a new political alternative for Nairobi.
Her entry into the gubernatorial contest is expected to intensify the competition for Nairobi’s top county leadership position ahead of the 2027 elections.
If elected, Wanjiru said her administration would prioritise sanitation, reliable water supply, infrastructure development and improved healthcare services.
She also pledged to create a business-friendly environment aimed at supporting job creation and attracting investment into the county.
Waste management, she added, would be among the most urgent challenges her administration would seek to address if she wins the governor’s seat.
