The Turkana County Department of Roads has officially handed over the Lokori–Elelea Road to a contractor, paving the way for the commencement of maintenance works aimed at improving transport connectivity in Turkana East.

The 30-kilometre road project is being funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) and forms part of the county government’s ongoing efforts to enhance road infrastructure and improve access to essential services.

The maintenance works will include grading, gravelling and bush clearing to restore the road’s condition, improve accessibility and ensure smoother movement for residents and motorists using the route.

The project will be supervised by Engineer Felix Nyongesa, who directed the contractor to mobilize immediately and begin the works without delay.

Speaking during the handover exercise, Engineer Nyongesa noted that several sections of the road have been affected by dense overgrown vegetation, making bush clearing a critical component of the project.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to engineering standards throughout the implementation period and urged the contractor to deliver quality work within the agreed timelines.

The rehabilitation of the Lokori–Elelea Road is expected to ease transportation challenges, improve access to markets, schools and healthcare facilities, and support economic activities within the area.

County officials say the project is part of broader investments being undertaken through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund to improve road networks across Turkana and enhance connectivity for local communities.

Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to boost mobility, facilitate trade and improve service delivery in the region.
