What began as an ordinary week in Nyamware Village, Emenwa, Nyamache, Kisii County, has turned into an extraordinary spectacle, with hundreds of people streaming into the area hoping to see what they believe is an image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, appearing on a wall.
The quiet homestead of 67-year-old Charles Onsombi has suddenly become the centre of attention, with visitors from different parts of the country making their way to the compound.
Many of those arriving head straight to one of Onsombi’s mud-thatched houses, a structure that was previously used as a kitchen and where the alleged manifestation is said to have appeared.
Onsombi said the phenomenon was first noticed by his wife early last week when she reported seeing what she believed was an image of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, on the kitchen wall.
Word quickly spread across Emenwa and neighboring villages before the story gained traction on social media. Within days, what had been a private family homestead had turned into a destination for hundreds of curious visitors and believers.
Onsombi said the influx has overwhelmed the family and disrupted their normal routine, with the continuous flow of visitors making it difficult for them to cook, shower and even hold family discussions.
He said the area has effectively been transformed into a pilgrimage site, while the pressure from the large crowds has raised concerns over the condition of the mud-thatched house, which he said is nearly collapsing due to the stampede.
Amid the growing fascination, however, Onsombi has raised concerns over the images circulating on social media.
He claimed that the image being widely shared online does not accurately represent what appears on the kitchen wall, alleging that some people may have digitally manipulated photographs using Artificial Intelligence to make the image appear more pronounced and attract attention.
Despite the concerns, some locals remain convinced that there is something unusual on the wall.
Visitors who have traveled to the homestead say they can see what they describe as an image of the Virgin Mary, although there are differing opinions about exactly what is visible.
For some believers, the phenomenon is primarily a matter of faith and perception, with locals maintaining that what a person sees may depend largely on their faith and interpretation of the image.
The unusual occurrence has also attracted the attention of police in Nyamache, who have been deployed to the area as authorities seek to establish what lies behind the claims that have drawn hundreds of people to the homestead.
