A renewed sense of hope is taking hold in Kondele as residents begin to witness the impact of enhanced community policing, a strategy now reshaping one of Kisumu’s most vibrant yet previously crime-prone neighborhoods.
During a high-energy community engagement forum, residents- including youth groups, bodaboda operators, religious leaders and elders- came together with law enforcement officers in a collective effort to tackle insecurity.
Residents Take Lead in Security Efforts
For many, the initiative marked a turning point, shifting residents from passive observers of crime to active participants in shaping security solutions.
Through open dialogue and practical demonstrations, participants were trained on how to work closely with police, share intelligence and take responsibility for safety within their communities.
“This is about restoring trust and making security everyone’s business,” said Ignatious Wendo, who is spearheading the initiative.
“When the community is involved, crime has nowhere to hide,” he added.
Backed by Law, Driven by Community
The programme is anchored in the National Police Service Act and the Community Policing Guidelines of 2011, which promote collaboration between citizens and law enforcement as a cornerstone of national security.
Official say the approach emphasises partnership, transparency and shared accountability.
Early Signs of Success
Residents report a noticeable decline in petty crime, improved police response and growing confidence in reporting incidents.
Bodaboda operators, once viewed with suspicion in security matters, are now playing a crucial role as frontline partners by sharing real-time information.
“We now know the officers, and they know us. There is trust,” said one youth participant. “Before, people feared speaking out. Now we feel protected.”
Tackling Root Causes of Crime
Beyond enforcement, the initiative is addressing underlying issues such as drug abuse, youth unemployment and mob justice- factors often linked to insecurity.
Religious leaders have also joined the effort, using their platforms to promote peace and discourage criminal behaviour among young people.
A Community Transformed
As the initiative gains momentum, residents say there is a growing belief that lasting security is achievable through unity.
While challenges remain, the transformation unfolding in Kondele signals a shift from policy to practice- where community policing is no longer theoretical, but a lived reality.
