Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has resurfaced after being reported missing over the weekend, revealing that he went into hiding after allegedly being trailed by suspicious persons.

Tuju, who made a public appearance at his home on Monday, said he disappeared on Saturday while en route to a radio interview with his driver. His vehicle was later found abandoned along Miotoni Lane in Karen.

According to Tuju, he became alarmed after noticing a Land Cruiser without a registration plate following him.

“I informed the police that I was being trailed by a Land Cruiser without a plate number,” he said.

He recounted how he managed to evade the suspected pursuers by diverting his route.

“I branched into Nandi Road; they were not able to branch in… it meant that they had to turn or go round to follow me. That is how I lost them,” Tuju explained.

The former minister said he later abandoned his vehicle and went into hiding, seeking refuge with a family in Kiambu.

“I want to thank a family in Kiambu…they were able to give me shelter until yesterday past midnight when I was able to come here,” he added.

His reappearance comes after his family reported him missing, prompting the DCI to launch investigations.

During the search, the DCI expressed frustration after being denied access to Tuju’s residence along Mwitu Drive, urging full cooperation from all parties.

“We urge full cooperation from all parties, including unrestricted access to relevant locations and prompt provision of information, for a swift and thorough resolution,” the DCI said in a statement.

At Tuju’s residence, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka raised concerns over what he described as the existence of an “abduction squad”, suggesting the incident points to broader security fears.

The incident comes amid an ongoing legal dispute involving Tuju over the ownership of Dari Business Park in Karen. The case centres on an alleged failure to repay a KSh 1.9 billion loan borrowed from the East African Development Bank in 205.

The contested properties include Entim Sidai Wellness Sanctuary, Tamarind Karen, and Dari Business Park.

Earlier, on March 19, Tuju wrote to Inspector General Douglas Kanja protesting what he termed as an unlawful police occupation of Dari Business Park.

In his letter, he alleged that more than 100 police officers raided the premises in the early hours of March 13 without a court order and remained stationed there for nearly a week.

Authorities are yet to provide further details on the alleged incident as investigations continue.
