Several families in Elgon View estate in Eldoret have been displaced after floodwaters swept into their homes following the overflow of the Sosiani River.
Residents said the flash floods struck at around 5 a.m on Monday morning after three consecutive days of heavy rainfall in the region, leaving a trail of destruction.
One of the affected residents, Haron Ngagaka, said families had suffered significant losses, with property worth millions of shillings destroyed.
“We have lost property worth millions. We are calling on the government to come to our aid,” he said.
Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea attributed the flooding to inadequate drainage systems compounded by heavy rainfall.
“We have a very big challenge with drainage, especially with flood waters from rural areas flowing into Sosiani,” he said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures as authorities assess the situation.
