Manchester United have suffered a potential setback in their pursuit of Elliot Anderson, with rivals Manchester City reportedly advancing in talks to sign the midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to tranfer expert Fabrizio Romano, City have opened advanced discussions with the player’s representatives as they intensify efforts to secure the Nottingham Forest star.

Anderson, 23, is expected to be one of the most sought-after midfielder this summer, with both Manchester clubs keen to strengthen their options in the middle of the park. Forest resisted interest in the England international during the January window but are now understood to be open to his departure later this year.

Fabrizio Romano indicated that while no agreement has been reached, City have made their intentions clear and are actively exploring the conditions of a potential deal.

“Manchester City are pushing to sign Anderson and are in advanced talks with his agents,” Romano said. “There is no agreement yet, but they have confirmed their interest.”

United, who are planning a major midfield overhaul, remain attentive to the situation but risk falling behind in the race. The club has also been linked with moves for Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace as part of their recruitment plans.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are also monitoring developments, with interest in re-signing Anderson. However, a return to St. James’ Park could depend on player sales, with Bruno Guimaraes or Sandro Tonali potentially needing to be offloaded to finance a move.

At Old Trafford, changes are expected in midfield, with Casemiro set to leave upon the expiry of his contract, while Manuel Ugarte could also depart after struggling for regular game time.
