A family in Wetaya Village, Khalaba Ward, Kanduyi Constituency in Bungoma County is demanding justice after a 40-year-old woman was allegedly attacked and seriously injured by a man known to her.
The victim, Marystella Kong’ani, a public health officer at a Bungoma hospital, was reportedly assaulted on Wednesday night shortly after returning home.
According to her niece, Sandra Kong’ani, 19, the incident occurred moments after the victim arrived at around 9.00pm.
“I opened the gate for her, served her supper, and then went to bed,” Sandra said.
She recalled hearing a disturbance minutes later.
“About five to ten minutes later, I heard someone breaking into the house through the window. After a short while, everything went quiet,” she narrated.
Growing suspicious, Sandra went to check on her aunt.

“When I entered the room, I found a man inside beating her. She was screaming for help,” she said.
Sandra said she recognised the attacker as a man who had previously visited the home.
“He held her by the neck and kept hitting her against the wall with kicks and blows. I begged him to stop, but he turned on me and told me to leave,” she added.
She immediately alerted other family members by phone.
“When he realised I was calling for help, he opened the door, took his clothes and went outside. He even snatched my phone before leaving,” she said.
Sandra further claimed the suspect took the house and car keys before stepping outside, where he was seen making phone calls as neighbours gathered.
“By the time villagers arrived, he had already escaped, leaving my aunt injured but conscious,” she said.
The suspect, identified as Bashir Biketi, is said to have been visiting the home since January.
“The man is not new to us. He has been coming here regularly, though he wasn’t very friendly,” Sandra noted.
A neighbour, Paul Khaemba, condemned the attack, saying residents responded quickly but found the suspect had already fled by jumping over the perimeter wall.
The victim’s brother, Josphat Kong’ani, said he received a distress call informing him of the incident.
“I do not know this man, and he has never been introduced to the family. We are questioning his motive,” he said.
The case was reported at Musikoma Police Post, and officers confirmed that investigations are ongoing. The incident was recorded under OB number 18/19/3/2026.
The victim is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Kisumu as her family calls for the suspect’s swift arrest and prosecution.
