The National Police Service, with support from the Kenya Defence Forces, has launched what authorities describe as the most comprehensive security operation in the country’s history, targeting renewed banditry attacks in parts of northern Kenya.
In a statement, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the goverment had made notable progress since 2022 in restoring stability in regions previously plagued by insecurity including parts of North Eastern Kenya and coastal areas such as Lamu.
However, fresh concerns have emerged over a resurgence of banditry in Meru County, where near-daily attacks have reportedly resulted in deaths, injuries, and widespread livestock theft.
The renewed operation is targeting key hotspots believed to be hideouts for armed groups, including Mukogodo Forest, Kipsing, Ngare Mara and Milima Lebendera in Isiolo County, as well as Lentana and Sereolipi in Samburu County.
According to Kindiki, additional elite security units have been deployed, backed by enhanced equipment and aerial support. The multi-agency operation will be intelligence-led and conducted across both land and air, with a mandate to neutralise threats, recover stolen livestock, and seize illegal firearms.
Security personnel have also been authorised to use lawful force to protect civilians and officers during the exercise.
The government has urged residents in affected areas to remain calm and cooperate fully with security agencies, noting that some zones may be declared disturbed and designated as operational areas.
Kindiki further confirmed holding a closed-door briefing with the Meru County Security and Intelligence Team, stressing the urgency of restoring order.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations spokesperson Michael Muchiri said recent incidents in Buuri East, Tigania East and West, Igembe North, Central, and Mutuati have led to loss of life and significant cattle theft.
“This is totally unacceptable and must be eradicated,” Muchiri said.
Authorities have called on residents to provide intelligence that could aid the crackdown. Tips can be reported at nearby police stations, through emergency number 999, 911 and 112, or anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800722203 or WhatsApp 0709570000.
