Mathare United delivered a stunning performance to defeat AFC Leopards 4-1 at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday evening, dealing a major setback to Ingwe’s Kenya Premier League title ambitions.
The convincing victory lifted the Mathare United further away from the relegation battle while casting fresh doubt on AFC Leopard’s ability to challenge league leaders Gor Mahia for the title.
AFC Leopards Start Brightly
AFC Leopards began the match strongly, pushing forward in search of an early goal.
Victor Omune delivered a dangerous cross early in the game, but Tyson Otieno narrowly missed connecting with it as Ingwe attempted to calm early nerves with a quick opener.
The visitors continued to dominate possession during the opening half hour as they aimed to close the gap on Gor Mahia at the top of the table.
Mathare Threaten Before Half-Time
Despite Leopard’s early pressure, Mathare United gradually grew into the match and began creating chances of their own.
Their best opportunity in the first half came in the 25th minute when Elly Asieche unleashed a powerful shot that forced the Leopards goalkeeper into a crucial save, conceding a corner.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead just before the half-time break when John Makwata found the back of the net, however, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the teams level at the interval.
Omune Gives Leopards the Lead
Shortly after the restart, AFC Leopards finally broke the deadlock.
Victor Omune opened the scoring 15 minutes into the second half after receiving a well-timed pass from Ronald Sichenye. Omune calmly slotted the ball past the Mathare goalkeeper to give Ingwe a 1-0 lead at Nyayo National Stadium.
Mathare Turn the Game Around
Rather than collapsing after conceding, Mathare United responded with renewed determination.
Their equaliser arrived in the 77th minute when Kevin Ouru capitalised on James Ssetuba’s failure to deal with a cross from Kinyajui, tapping the ball into the net.
The goal revitalised the Slum Boys, who suddenly looked energized and confident in attack.
Just six minutes later, Ouru struck again to complete his brace, putting Mathare United ahead 2-1 and leaving AFC Leopards stunned.
Late Goals Seal Dominant Victory
Mathare United continued their relentless push in the closing stages of the match.
Isaac Omweri added a spectacular third goal with a powerful strike that effectively sealed the victory for the hosts.
Moments later, right at the 90-minute mark, Ian Omondi capped off the impressive performance by scoring the fourth goal to complete a remarkable comeback.
Impact on the League Table
The victory lifts Mathare United to 11th place on the league table with 29 points.
Meanwhile, AFC Leopards remain second on 43 points, giving Gor Mahia the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to 10 points when they play on Sunday.
