Government has commended leaders and residents of Nyakach and neighboring Kericho for making significant progress in restoring peace in an area that has historically faced inter-community security challenges.

PS for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo delivered the message during the burial of the late Lt. Col (Rtd) George Were in Nyakach.

During the ceremony, Dr. Omollo praised local leadership for playing a crucial role in calming tensions that had previously resulted in cattle rustling, destruction of property, and loss of lives in the border region between Kisumu County and Kericho County.

Leaders Recognized for Promoting Dialogue

The Principal Secretary highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Member of Parliament for Nyakach, Members of County Assembly, and other local leaders from both counties who have worked alongside security agencies to promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

According to Dr. Omollo, the cooperation between community leaders, security officers, and local administrators has been instrumental in restoring stability in the region.

“Peace is not something we achieve once and forget. It is something we must protect every day through dialogue, cooperation, and responsible leadership,” Dr. Omollo said, urging residents and leaders alike to safeguard the gains made and continue nurturing the spirit of peaceful coexistence between the communities of Kisumu and Kericho Counties.

Youth Urged to Reject Political Violence

Addressing broader national issues, Dr. Omollo also appealed to young people across the country to resist being manipulated by politicians to engage in violence as Kenya approaches the next election cycle.

He emphasized that political competition should never escalate into chaos, destruction of property, or loss of life, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring that democratic freedoms are exercised within the framework of the law.

“The President has been very clear from the first day that under his leadership, violence and chaos will not become the currency of our politics,” he stated.

Government Warns Against Lawlessness

While noting that the country has generally experienced calm in recent months, Dr. Omollo acknowledged that isolated incidents of unrest still occur and must be addressed firmly through lawful means.

He referenced a recent incident in Migori County, describing it as unfortunate and confirming that security agencies are already investigating the matter to establish the facts and ensure accountability.

“We had a very unfortunate incident in Migori County yesterday. Our security officers are already handling the matter and the instructions are very clear: anyone involved in any form of criminality must face the full force of the law,” he said.

The Principal Secretary reiterated that the government has issued firm instructions to security agencies that individuals involved in criminal activities must be held accountable regardless of their status.

“It does not matter whether you are an elected leader, an aspiring leader, a businessman, or an ordinary citizen. The rule of law must prevail, and no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to National Peace

Dr. Omollo concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and strengthening security coordination across the country.

He encouraged leaders in other regions to emulate the example set by Nyakach and Kericho, where dialogue and collaboration between communities and security agencies have demonstrated that sustainable peace is possible when all stakeholders work together.
