KAPSABET, NANDI COUNTY– 11 students of Kapsabet School for the Deaf were hospitalised on Wednesday after falling into a collapsed septic tank within the school compound.

The incident occurred as the learners rushed to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto’s motorcade passing near the school.

According to eyewitnesses, the students stood on an old septic tank measuring approximately 20 feet in length. The structure, unable to support the combined weight of the curious learners, collapsed, plunging all 11 students into the tank.

Rescue teams and school staff acted swiftly to pull the students to safety and rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment.

School authorities and local leaders have expressed concern over the safety of school infrastructure, particularly older facilities that may pose a risk to students. “We are deeply concerned about the wellbeing of our learners and will take immediate measures to ensure no such accident occurs in the future,” said a school official.

The incident has raised questions about safety preparedness during public events, especially when high-profile visitors, such as President Ruto, are involved. Parents and education stakeholders are calling for urgent inspections of school facilities nationwide to prevent similar accidents.

While the students are reported to be in stable condition, the accident underscores the importance of maintaining safe learning environments for vulnerable children, including those with special needs. Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the septic tank collapse and have urged schools to prioritise safety measures during public visits and school activities.
