Former Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has died after suffering a sudden heart attack, his club Nejmeh SC confirmed.
Firat, who was serving as the first-team coach of the Lebanese club, collapsed on Monday, March 9, at Istanbul Airport while travelling to Adana, Turkey. He had departed from Beirut just hours earlier.
In a statement, Nejmeh mourned the loss of the experienced coach, describing him as a dedicated professional who demonstrated high ethical standards throughout his career and left a positive impact on players and staff.
“With great sadness, Star Athletic Club mourns first-team coach Captain Engin Firat, who passed away following a sudden heart attack while at Istanbul Airport on his way to Adana, just hours after leaving Beirut,” the club said.
Firat previously coached Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, and was widely respected for his commitment to developing the squad during his tenure.
His death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes expected from across the sport.
