Bayern Munich is charging toward another Bundesliga title, and star striker Harry Kane is closing in on a historic personal milestone: breaking Robert Lewandoski’s single-season goal record.
Bayern’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion last weekend extended their lead to 11 points with 10 games left.
Struggling Borussia Monchengladbach, who face Bayern at the Allianz Arena on Friday, look unlikely to halt Kane’s march toward history. Bayern needs just 14 more goals to surpass their single-season record of 101, set in 1971-72.
Kane has already scored 30 goals in 24 league appearances this season-11 short of Lewandoski’s 41-goal mark from 2020-21.
“I’m in a good position at the moment,” Kane told German tabloid Bild. “It will be difficult to beat him, but I think the chances are pretty even.”
When asked if he would bet on himself to break the record, Kane smiled: “I’d prefer other people bet on me.”
“I don’t really look at the records themselves, I just focus on what I should achieve in each stage of the season,” he added.
At this pace, the England striker is on track to surpass the record, though Bayern coach Vincent Kompany may rest him with the Champions League and German Cup coming up.
Former Bayern and Germany striker Jurgen Klinsmann expressed full confidence in Kane, telling AFP: “What Harry has been doing since joining Bayern is incredible. Kompany would never stand in his way.”
Rising Bundesliga Star: Deniz Unda
Stuttgard striker Deniz Undav is another name to watch. At 29, he has 14 goals in 20 league matches, averaging a career-best goal every 106 minutes.
Unlike Kane, Undav doesn’t take penalties—14 of Kane’s 30 goals this season are from the spot—meaning Undav trails by just two goals in open play.
Despite his impressive form, Undav has voiced frustration over being underrated. “I have the best scoring record, so I don’t understand why people talk about other strikers and not me,” he told Bild. “I’m a classic striker who scores and creates chances.”
